Summary

On 10 September 2023, while the container ship VERA D was approaching the Port of Reykjavík, a close-quarters situation was identified with the passenger ship ARTIC ROSE, which was departing the port. VERA D’s alteration of course to starboard prevented a collision but took the ship into shallow water, where it made contact with the seabed. There were no injuries or pollution. VERA D sustained damage to the hull, tanks and propeller and subsequently proceeded for repairs.

Safety recommendations

SR01-2023/306, à companhia gestora do ARTIC ROSE: Assess using available software capabilities and VHF communications to understand the navigational context. SR02-2023/306, à mesma companhia: Assess operating a passage plan that keeps ARTIC ROSE well clear of deeper-draught traffic.

Lessons learned

The passage plan should provide sufficient sea room for manoeuvring and clearly identify no-go areas; local craft should take account of non-local, deeper-draught vessels; the capabilities of ECDIS, AIS, ARPA, alarms, visual observation and VHF should be fully utilised; an additional lookout improves monitoring of the navigational context.
