Summary

On 13 June 2018, LUZÉ was proceeding under autopilot towards gillnets set near Pontal da Carrapateira when the Master left the wheelhouse to investigate unusual operation of the main engine. The vessel struck the Pedra da Galé rocks at 0328. The Master steered west to clear the rocks, but flooding was identified in the engine room and the bilge arrangements were unable to control the water ingress. The Master ordered abandonment and all seven persons boarded a liferaft. The fishing vessel LAGOAL recovered the survivors about 90 minutes later and landed them at Baleeira. No serious injuries or pollution were reported. LUZÉ subsequently grounded and was a total loss.

Safety recommendations

No formal safety recommendation was issued. The report identifies as good practice that Masters of fishing vessels should avoid carrying non-seafarers when a fishing voyage is expected to exceed 24 hours

Lessons learned

A navigational watch should be maintained whenever a vessel is under way, including when the person responsible for navigation must respond to a machinery problem. Work and rest arrangements should ensure that sufficient qualified seafarers are available for voyages exceeding 24 hours, and non-seafarers should not be assigned fishing or navigation duties.
