Summary
On 17 April 2014, MAR NOSSO departed Avilés, Spain, with 12 crew members for a fishing voyage. After the first tow, the crew recovered the net and estimated the catch at approximately 1,000 boxes of fish. With the codend still on the fishing deck, the vessel began to heel to port. The crew were instructed to release the codend and alert those resting inside the vessel, but MAR NOSSO capsized approximately two minutes later. Seven crew members were recovered alive by MAR DA GALEGA, two were recovered deceased by KIKA and three remained missing. The vessel remained inverted for approximately two hours before sinking by the stern.

Lessons learned
A rapid and unexplained heel during fishing operations requires immediate action to reduce suspended or deck loads, alert everyone aboard and prepare the lifesaving appliances. Lifejackets should be worn when stability is deteriorating or abandonment may become necessary. Maintaining bridge and machinery-space awareness during fishing operations can preserve opportunities to identify flooding, changes in stability or other developing hazards.
