Summary

On 30 April 2024, RIX MUNTE was berthed at the Port of Køge, Denmark, loading scrap metal when smoke was detected in the aft cargo hold. The cargo also included rubber, plastic and potentially other combustible waste materials. As it was not possible to close the hatch covers and deploy the fixed CO₂ fire-extinguishing system, the fire was fought with water by the crew and shore-based firefighters while part of the cargo was removed. The firefighting operation lasted approximately twelve hours. No injuries were reported; however, the vessel sustained material damage and was temporarily unfit for navigation.

 

Safety recommendations

No safety recommendations were issued in the final report; preventive measures were implemented by the ISM Company during circulation of the draft report.

Lessons learned

 

Cargo acceptance should verify the actual composition of the scrap metal and the risks associated with combustible materials, liquids, batteries or metal turnings; the shipper's declaration should be obtained prior to loading; the cargo should not exceed the hatch coamings in order to allow the rapid closure of the hatch covers; continuous fire watch and, where appropriate, thermal monitoring should be in place; the crew should be able to monitor and intervene before the adverse event develops.
