Summary
On 27 October 2021, SEGREDOS DO MAR was under way west of Sesimbra with 13 persons on board when a fire was detected in the engine room through CCTV. The Master attempted to fight the fire with a portable extinguisher, but it spread rapidly through the wooden vessel. All persons abandoned to the tender and were subsequently rescued by O PORTIPESCA. SEGREDOS DO MAR sank and was a total loss.

Lessons learned
Unattended machinery spaces require effective early fire detection. CCTV can support monitoring but does not replace automatic fire and smoke detection or competent machinery-space rounds. Watchkeeping arrangements should provide independent capacity to monitor navigation and machinery. The timely abandonment to the tender and prompt assistance from O PORTIPESCA prevented loss of life.
