Summary
On 14 August 2019, SETEMAR was pole-and-line fishing south of Madeira when two waves estimated at 4 to 5 metres struck the vessel. Lessons learned
Distress equipment should provide an automatic alert following rapid capsizing. Crews should understand how the EPIRB operates and what supplies are carried in the liferaft. When operating close to the vessel’s sea-state limits, heading, speed and watertight integrity should minimise rolling and downflooding risk.
